What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is the treatment of impairments, injuries, and disabilities through physical methods used to promote and restore mobility, strength, function and quality of life. Physical Therapy helps preserve, enhance, and restore movement and physical function that has been impaired or threatened by disability, injury, or disease. People of all ages can utilize physical therapy to improve one’s overall health.

Physical Therapy may be needed for the following reasons:

  • Restore movement and range of motion
  • Gain flexibility and maximize physical strength
  • Reduce swelling
  • Decrease muscle spasms
  • Prevent future injury

What is Treatment Like at Medical Care of WNY?

Treatment associated with physical therapy is often referred to as rehabilitation. Rather than drugs or surgery we educate, train, and use therapeutic exercises and modalities to rehabilitate our patients. Rehabilitation includes, but is not limited to:

  • Passive and active therapeutic exercise
  • Joint mobilization and mechanical traction
  • Massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Paraffin wax
  • Heat and ice therapy
  • Electrical stimulation

As treatment progresses, the physical therapist documents each patient’s progress, conducts periodic re-evaluations and carefully monitors the patient’s treatment plan. In all cases, a home exercise program is developed to foster the patient’s recovery, as well as to allow each patient to play an active role in their treatment and management plan.

What Are the Expected Outcomes of Physical Therapy?

Outcomes of the rehabilitation process are focused on the patient’s return to his/her performance of the activities of daily living. The fundamental purpose of the treatment plan is to integrate newly acquired gains in flexibility, strength and coordination and apply them to how the individual functions at home and at work. In effect, the physical therapist helps to ensure that the healing process continues and promotes the musculoskeletal abnormality.
